Effective Moth Solutions
Common Clothes Moth

Common Clothes Moth

Tineola bisselliella

  • Target: The traps are designed to attract and trap male common clothes moths.
  • Appearance: These moths are small, with a wingspan of about 9-16mm. They have golden-colored wings and a reddish head.
  • Habitat: Common clothes moths are most active in dark, undisturbed areas, such as closets, wardrobes, and behind furniture.
  • Active Period: They are typically active from February to September.

Pheromone Traps

  • How they work: The traps use pheromones, which are chemical scents that attract male moths. The male moths are lured into the trap and become stuck, preventing them from mating and reducing the moth population.

Common Clothes Moth

Case-Bearing Clothes Moth

Tinea pellionella

  • Relative: While also known as the carpet moth, this is actually a distant relative of the common clothes moth.
  • Pheromones: Interestingly, their pheromone structure shares similarities with common clothes moths, but they are not exactly the same. Because of this, pheromone traps designed for common clothes moths might not be effective for carpet moths.
  • Appearance: Similar to common clothes moths, carpet moths are small with a wingspan of about 9-16mm. They can be distinguished by their brown wings with faint dots.
  • Active Period: Carpet moths are generally active during a different time of year than common clothes moths. You’ll likely see them fluttering around from June to October.
  • Control: It’s important to note that pheromone traps may not be a suitable control method for carpet moth infestations.

Pale Backed Clothes Moth

Pale Backed Clothes Moth

Monopis crocicapitella

  • Not a Close Relative: Despite its name, the pale backed clothes moth is not directly related to the common clothes moth.
  • Limited Pheromone Attraction: Interestingly, some pale backed clothes moths seem to be attracted to the pheromone traps designed for common clothes moths, but only in small numbers. These traps may not be a reliable control method for this species.
  • Identification: This moth is easily distinguished by a prominent pale stripe running along the top of its back wings.
  • Appearance: Similar to other clothes moths, the pale backed clothes moth has a small wingspan of about 9-16mm.
  • Active Period: They are typically active during the same months as common clothes moths, February to September.
  • Control: It’s important to note that pheromone traps may not be a suitable control method for carpet moth infestations.

  • Wide Variety of Micro Moths: There are over 3,000 species of micro moths in the UK, and this trap targets only a specific few.
  • Trap Effectiveness: If you haven’t identified any of the three moths listed previously (common clothes moth, carpet moth, or pale backed clothes moth), this trap likely won’t be effective for your needs.
  • Test Packs: We also offer smaller test packs before you commit to purchasing a full moth trap kit.
  • Control: It’s important to note that pheromone traps WILL NOT be a suitable control method for carpet moth infestations.
